These are often the home or community languages of students whose families speak them, though structured instruction may be limited or inconsistent. Public schools, community programs, even weekend […]

Code-switching research isn’t just something linguistics scholars talk about in journals, it’s entering the conversation about best practices in multilingual classrooms, literacy instruction, and interpreting. Research is showing that code-switching (the practice of moving back and forth between two or more languages in speech or text) can do more than confuse, it can actually enhance […]
In August 2025, the Cambridge Dictionary made headlines, adding over 6,000 new words inspired by TikTok, YouTube, and other online cultures. Among them are “skibidi,” a playful, often nonsensical term for “cool” or “bad”; “delulu,” short for “delusional”; and “tradwife,” describing a social media–active traditionalist spouse. Across the United States, the profession of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting is facing a critical challenge, a significant shortage of qualified interpreters. As of now, there are 125 active ASL interpreter education programs in colleges and universities, but only 18 of these are accredited, a mere 14% of the total. This gap not only […]
On August 20, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education quietly rescinded a pivotal 2015 “Dear Colleague” guidance that outlined schools’ obligations to support English Learners (ELs) under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Educational Opportunities Act (EEOA). Instead of asking students to leave those languages at the door, many educators are embracing translanguaging as a way to unlock learning. Translanguaging strategies […]
As demand for multilingual content grows, a quieter, but critically important, trend is gaining traction: sustainable localization. In 2025, Language Service Providers (LSPs) and interpreting firms are increasingly adopting eco-conscious practices to reduce their environmental impact. Here’s why “green localization” is trending now, where sustainability in language services is heading, and what it means for […]
For decades, education in many countries followed a simple rule: one classroom, one language. If you were in an English-medium school, you spoke only English. If you were in a French school, you stuck to French. But in today’s multilingual world, this approach is shifting. Teachers, linguists, and policymakers are turning toward a concept called […]
When most people think of interpreting, they picture conference booths, legal hearings, or business meetings. But in 2025, interpreters are increasingly stepping into a very different role, acting as linguistic first responders while interpreting in crisis zones. Whether during natural disasters, humanitarian aid efforts, or emergency evacuations, interpreters are becoming vital links between those in […]
The interpreting world has always been about bridging gaps, language, culture, and context. But in 2025, “bridging” has evolved into something far more dynamic. Interpreting is no longer confined to voice or text. Thanks to the rise of multimodal interpreting, professionals are now blending audio, video, text, and even visual cues into a single, seamless […]
